Silvia’s Volunteer Experience at IBC

Silvia’s Volunteer Experience at IBC

“I firmly believe that we can all contribute to build a healthier future by helping others.”

Aware of the damage that alcohol- and other drug consumption can cause in people’s lives, it has been extremely rewarding to work for IBC as a volunteer as interpreter and translator since 2020. I’m very grateful for the opportunity to use my skills to promote programmes and policies to protect people from alcohol- and other drug harm. I firmly believe that we can all contribute to build a healthier future by helping others. Especially satisfying has been for me to interpret remote trainings and meetings during the pandemic, helping IBC to continue its work in difficult times.

“I developed a sincere and trusting relationship, feeling that we can move forward together!”

With a background in international cooperation and work experience with the Red Cross, I was excited to change the color of the “Cross” and discover a new organisation. As an IBC volunteer I have been accompanying a self-help project in Burkina Faso for over a year. During that time, the team of the Blue Cross Burkina Faso and I developed a sincere and trusting relationship, feeling that we can move forward together. My placement with IBC has helped me to integrate into the Swiss labour market – I have now found a job in the non-profit sector!

“If you want to go fast, of alone. If you want to go far, go together!”

I am a helpful person, so it was natural for me to respond to IBC´s call for volunteers. I like that as a volunteer I can contribute to giving a hand to those in need. It’s been almost a year now that I am a member of the IBC volunteer team and I will be happy to keep on contributing. As a double bachelors’ holder in linguistics I am working as a conference interpreter and translator since 2008 to-date. As a volunteer for IBC as an international and therewith multi-language organisation, I can use my professional experience to do good. I have reviewed and translated documents such as the Theory of Change for the Life Skills programme and material for the good governance training IBC staff organises for its members worldwide.

My involvement with IBC brings me self-satisfaction and I believe I help IBC to promote its programmes and assist people with addiction problems.

Field visit Togo

Field visit Togo

Anne Babb and Anja Tuchtenhagen, the General Secretary and fundraiser at IBC, are back from their recent field trip to Lomé. They really appreciated the first-hand impressions of the projects, especially after Corona. The work at Blue Cross Togo is inspiring and bringing positive results in schools and the wider community. Through the close collaboration with various Government departments, municipalities, churches and NGO’s Blue Cross Togo is leading developments for new legislation to better regulate the sale of alcohol in general and around schools in particular. The Life Skills prevention and education programme foster healthy behavior and enable the youth to practice wise choices in various situations in their life. Blue Cross Togo also reaches out to help people of all ages through a wide range of projects. These include girls at the local hairdressing academy, women through community action and male taxi drivers. Anne and Anja saw how the Blue Cross Togo have worked hard to open Togo’s first ever rehabilitation centre to help people with addiction issues. This is a big step forward and helps bring positive change in the lives of many more people. The appreciated work with the local team was inspiring, fruitful and very constructive!
