Christel’s Volunteer Experience at IBC

“Being a volunteer allows me to promote and to defend the values that are close to my heart!”

Since 2013, I have been giving some of my time to IBC as a translator and proofreader. With degrees in accounting, business management as well as in nature protection and management of green areas, I feel happy to expand my knowledge with IBC in the field of health and alcohol- and drug consumption and its impact on global development. Being a volunteer allows me to promote and to defend the values that are close to my heart!

“Joining IBC in this mission makes me feel like I am doing something to make the world a better place!”

In my first years in Switzerland, I focused on learning German and integrating into the society. My engagement with IBC helped me in this process. The team is doing an amazing job in fighting against drug- and alcohol harm. Joining IBC in this mission makes me feel like I am doing something to make the world a better place. I worked with the team in the office in Bern, mainly doing translations, revising budgets and financial plans and establishing a new accounting software. As IBC is an international organisation, I feel that I am helping to improve people´s lives all over the world even though I am not working in the field! A nice and valuable experience!

I am convinced that the prospects IBC provides for societies around the world are very important.

Since 2018 I have had the opportunity to collaborate with IBC and utilise my experience in the field of graphic design. I worked on a wide range of IBC’s documents and publications. By volunteering I was able to gain more experience in my work field and improve my skills as a junior graphic designer. What I like as a volunteer for IBC is that I am convinced that the prospects IBC provides for societies around the world are very important. It makes for me the vision of a better future. In providing good designs for IBC’s publications, I can help to communicate IBC’s vision – I like that!

“I really became part of IBC’s mission to give people healthy life perspectives without alcohol and drugs.”

I graduated recently from Durham University with a degree in Modern Languages. Given my background, I got involved with IBC as a volunteer translator and proofreader in 2020. The reason why I started the volunteer position was that I wanted to use my language skills to help others. Besides this, working on a variety of documents helped me to keep up my language skills and gain work experience. I got a good insight into the organisational structures and the collaboration between IBC and its different partners and member organisations. I really became part of IBC’s mission to give people healthy life perspectives without alcohol and drugs.

As a mother, I particularly appreciate IBC’s work for young people.

In 2019 I started to look for a pro bono activity to complement my professional role as a lawyer – and I found my place at IBC! I am impressed by the approach to fostering sustainable development by focusing on prevention of alcohol and drug harm. As a mother, I particularly appreciate IBC’s work for young people. My main activity is proofreading and translation work. Whenever I can, I also use my legal skills to support IBC’s activities. I admire the team’s dedication and commitment, and I am very happy to be able to assist them as a volunteer.

I was looking for an opportunity to support children and young people.

At IBC, I found a gorgeous and highly committed team appreciative of its volunteers´ input. While orientingmyself, I was looking for an opportunity to support children and young people. At IBC, I found exactly what I was hoping to find, in fact even more. I started in IBC´s Bern office with administrative tasks and then shifted my focus to fundraising. Meanwhile, I realized that I would like to develop a professional career in this field. Thank you, IBC!
